Amor Fati — Love your Fate
As a survivor of domestic violence, I understand it can be difficult to stay positive and embrace life’s curveballs. However I have found, no matter what life throws our way, it is possible to thrive. As survivors, it is one of greatest strengths to move forward with resilience and hope. One perspective that can help us through our journey is Amor Fati, which means “Love your Fate.” This article will explain how Amor Fati can help us to appreciate our life’s circumstances and find peace in the moment.
I remember soon after coming to a point where I was ready to accept my experience with trauma and domestic violence, I started reading a book about Stoicism. When I read the chapter outlining the concept of Amor Fati, a wave a peace swept over me. It was like a weight had been lifted and I had been given the map to find meaning in a situation that seemed chaotic and senseless.
I found a way to assign meaning and purpose to the suffering I had endured. It became crystal clear it was not by chance or bad luck I had suffered 10 plus years of abuse and mistreatment, it was meant to be fuel for my fire.
Amor Fati does not mean that we should blindly accept everything that happens to us, but rather that we should embrace life’s challenges and see them as opportunities for growth. It is about learning to love our lives, even when things are tough. Amor Fati can help us to find beauty in the midst of pain, and to see our challenges as opportunities for transformation.
I look back on those times before the match was lit, and see myself in a different light. I was weak and childish. I would buckle at the first sign of pressure or stress, and felt an easy life was something I deserved because I was a good person. That isn’t how life works. It was only after things unraveled did I begin to understand these important truths.
Amor Fati is about more than just accepting our fate; it is about actively loving our lives, even when they are difficult. When we love our lives, we are able to find joy in the midst of pain. We can see our challenges as opportunities for growth, and we can embrace life with all of its ups and downs. Amor Fati can help us to appreciate the beauty in life, even when it is hard to see.
It really is a shift from victim to survivor. Not “why me?” but “why not me?” It was a fundamental shift to a place of empowerment and strength that I had struggled to find my entire adult life.
No matter what our individual circumstances may be, we can all benefit from the perspective of Amor Fati. When we learn to love our lives, we can find peace in the midst of challenges. Amor Fati can help us appreciate our messy, complicated lives.
